School Calendar

School year in Slovakia takes ten months from September to June.

The important days/things in our school year:

On September 1^st is the public holiday so we go to school on September 2^nd.

We have lot of public holidays and school holidays during the school year:

	15^th	religious	Our Lady of Sorrows	Our Lady of Sorrows is the patron saint of Slovakia.
October	30^th – 31^st	school	Autumn holiday	We have in this time autumn holidays usually from the 30^th sometimes from the 31^st October and they last to the 3^rd November.
November	1^st	religious	All Saints' Day	People light candles on the cemeteries.
	2^nd	religious	All Souls’ Day	People think of the deceased.
	17^th	public	Students’ Day	The day of fight for freedom and democracy – in our country this day was on the 17^th November 1989.
December	24^th	religious	Christmas Eve	The whole family meets in the evening and they eat the special dinner, and give presents to each other under the Christmas tree.
	25^th	religious	Christmas Day	The First Christmas Day – old habit in Slovakia is that people don’t go visiting family and friends
	26^th	religious	Boxing Day	The Second Christmas Day – in our calendar there is a name Stefan and people celebrate it.
January	1^st	public	New Year´s Day	Czechoslovakia was devided into The Slovak republic and The Czech republic. Therefore The Slovak republic was founded on the 1^st January 1993.
	6^th	religious	The Three Kings	The names of The Three Kings are: Gaspar, Melichar and Baltazar. In this day a priest consecrates houses.
	22^nd Dec. – 7^th Jan.	school	Winter holiday	People celebrate religious holidays.
March - April	from Maundy Thursday – to Tuesday after Easter Monday	school religious	Easter holiday	People celebrate Easter holiday.
May	1^st	public	Labour Day	It is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of the international labour movement.
	8^th	public	Victory Day	Victory Day marks the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in the Second World War.
July/August	1^st July – 31^st August	school	Summer Holiday	It is the biggest holiday of the year.
July	5^th	public	Saints Cyril and Methodius Day	Cyril (Constantine) and Methodius came to Great Moravia in 863 and they established the first Slavic Glagolitic alphabet and language.
August	29^th	public	Slovak National Uprising anniversary	Slovak National Uprising – The Slovak rose against Nazi Germany.
